Nova Scotian Honoured for Transformative Literacy Journey
CANADA, September 8 - Sada Kabamba of Halifax is being recognized for his accomplishments, perseverance and commitment with the 2026 Council of the Federation Literacy Award.
The award is presented annually in each province and territory to an adult learner who has made outstanding progress in literacy and demonstrated leadership in their community, school or workplace.
“Lifelong learning has the power to transform lives,” said Premier Tim Houston. “Literacy is more than a skill. It is a bridge to confidence, knowledge and possibility. This award recognizes Sada and his journey. His dedication and determination light the way for others and show what is possible through adult learning and the opportunities it can create for Nova Scotians at every stage of life.”
Originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mr. Kabamba spent years in a refugee camp in Uganda. He was unable to attend school because of financial barriers, but embraced the opportunity to pursue an education when he arrived in Canada in 2023.
Starting over in Nova Scotia was not easy. He faced culture shock, a new climate and the challenge of learning a new language. With support from teachers and staff at Université Sainte-Anne, he remained focused on his goals and committed to his education.
In just three years, Mr. Kabamba earned his adult high school diploma while strengthening his English language skills through English as a second language classes.
Mr. Kabamba's academic achievements sparked a new interest in engineering and technology. He recently began the electronic engineering technology program at Nova Scotia Community College and hopes to become an engineer who designs solutions that improve people's lives.
Beyond his academic accomplishments, Mr. Kabamba is known for encouraging and supporting his peers. His instructors describe him as compassionate, resilient and dedicated to helping others succeed.
His success reflects the impact that adult learning programs can have in helping Nova Scotians overcome barriers, build confidence and create new opportunities for themselves and their families.
